Naming A Dog Tips
It’s never easy to pick a name for your dog so here are some helpful tips!
- Keep It short-(ish): One or two syllables names will most likely be your best bet. Don’t worry, most of the names on this list are on the short end. If you like a name that is long, consider a nickname. A nickname will allow for you to quickly and easily call your dog.
- Avoid common words: It’s super important for your dog to be able to distinguish his/her name from other words. This means avoid name that sound too similar to commands or other pet names.
- Test it: Take some time to see what names fit your dogs look and personality. Start by saying the name aloud to see if it’s easy for your to say. If it is, then try it with your dog to determine if it’s a fit.
- Pick a name you like: Be sure you love the name you select because you’ll be saying it ALOT! Even if this means taking a few extra days.. it’ll be worth it.
Renaming Dog
Your dog probably did or will come with a name. That name may be one that your dog has only had for a few days or it could be one they have had for years. Either way, there is a very good chance it’s a name you don’t like. It is perfectly okay for you to rename your dog.
You can decide to change the name completely – just know if it is a name your dog actually recognizes it will take him or her a while to understand their new name. One way to ease this process is to consider a name that sounds similar to the existing name. That you means selecting a name that starts and/or ends in the same letters as the original name.
