Duo Names
If you are adopting two dogs, you’ll definitely want to consider how their names will sound together. While they don’t have to both start with the same letter, it can be super cute when they do.
Since naming two pets can be tricky here are recommendations on how to pick a pet name for your dog, cat, or any animal.
1. If one of the names isn’t clicking do not force it. It is absolutely okay to choose two names that you like that have nothing to do with one another and do not start with the same letter.
2. Be sure to consider the pros & cons of similar names. Names that both start with R can be incredibly cute, however keep in mind that you will be using the names to call your dogs. If the names are too similar it could be confusing.
Here are some ideas for pair names that start with R.
Red and Rover | Rocky and Rococo |
Rock and Roll | Rocky and Road |

Tips For Naming A Dog
Maybe you’ve made it this far and have jotted down a few names you like but are thinking now what? Here’s some tips for picking out your new dogs name.
- Keep It short-(ish): Short names are easy to say and understand. It’s recommended to stick to one or two syllables. HOWEVER, you can totally pick a name that is longer. Your best bet is to then come up with a nickname which is often a shortened version of the full name. For example if you select the name Remington maybe his or her nickname can be Remi.
- Avoid common words: You’ll want your dog to come whenever his or her name is called so it’s best to avoid any words that are said frequently. This includes both names (ie. try not to name your pup the same name as a close friend or family member) as well as commands. You’ll want your dog to be able to distinguish what you’re saying.
- Try it out: Sometimes a name that seems good on paper or a screen but that doesn’t mean you’re going to like it aloud. See if it easily rolls off the tongue as you will be saying it ALOT. If the name sounds good after you’ll said it a few times then be sure to try it out with your dog to see if it fits their personality.
- Pick a name you like: at the end of the day it is your dog so be sure you’re happy with it. Even if it takes trying out multiple names or taking a few extra days to think it over. You should be excited about the name.
Should I Rename My Dog?
This is a common question (and one I faced myself) if you adopt a dog that already has a name. If you are considering whether you can or should rename them… there is no right or wrong answer. It is completely up to you… and don’t let anyone tell you different! The most important thing is if you do change his or her name, just to give it time as it will take awhile for your dog to understand. If you do decide to switch names, selecting a name that starts and ends with similar sounds will make it easier. But again, go with your gut on selecting a name.
To sum it up, we hope you enjoyed the list and found it helpful. Did you find a name you like? Let us know below.
