Pair Dog Names
If you are lucky enough to be adopting two dogs, be sure to consider how their names will sound together. While they don’t have to both start with the same letter, it can be super cute when they do.
Here are recommendations for how to pick a pet name for your dog, cat, or any animal.
1. Sometimes names don’t click together and that’s okay. You can totally choose two names that do not pair together, especially if one of the names you wanted just isn’t working with the other.
2. Similar names are cute but could be confusing. Names that both start with S (like the ones below) are awesome however keep in mind that you need your dog to come when he or she is called. If the names are too similar it could be confusing. Use your best judgement.
Here are some ideas for pair names that start with S.
Salsa & Samba | Shrimp & Scampi |
Scuba & Steve | Star & Stripe |
Sesame & Seed | Sugar & Spice |
Tips For Naming A Dog
If you’ve made it this far, hopefully you’ve jotted down a few names you like! But now you might be thinking, okay what next or how do you choose. Here are tips for naming your new dog.
- Keep It short-(ish): Short names are easy to say and understand. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll want to stick to one or two syllables. Most of the names on this list fit that rule, however you can totally pick a name that is longer. If you do you may want to think of a nickname which is often a shortened version of the full name. For example if you select the name Salvador maybe his or her nickname can be Sal.
- Avoid common words: It’s important that your dog can distinguish between his or her name and normal conversation. To do this you’ll want to avoid words that you commonly use, this means names already in your household as well as common commands (sit, stay, etc.). You’ll want your dog to be able to distinguish what you’re saying.
- Try it out: Not every name you like will make sense for your dog. It’s important to try a few different names to see what fits. Start by saying it aloud and see if it rolls off your tongue. If you like saying it, try it with your dog to see if it’s a match for their personality.
- Pick a name you like: it’s super important that you like the name you pick. Your dog will have that name the rest of his or her life. Take time to try out multiple names or take a few extra days to think it over. You should be excited about the name.
Should I Rename My Dog?
When you adopt an older dog, this is a common question. I even faced it myself when I adopted a four year old dog. When it comes to whether you can or should rename a dog… there is no right or wrong answer.
If you really dislike the name or the dog had the name for a very short period then definitely feel free to rename. If you’re on the fence about the name or it’s a name the dog has had for a very long time you’ll want to think it through. The most important thing if you do change his or her name, be sure to give your dog some time to learn and be patient. When renaming, selecting a name that starts and ends with similar sounds will make it easier. But again, go with your gut on selecting a name.
To sum it up, we hope you found a dog name that starts with s that you love! If you did, be sure to let us know.
